Being born an idealist of idealists,
he has eventually come to accept things about human beings that are not so pleasant to face.
That humans are sometimes made slaves to money,
that people are essentially selfish, even in their most unselfish moments,
that love does not often last as you would have wanted it to,
and that life is frequently more of suffering than pleasure.
That even in the best governed of nations, freedom and equality are but words quoted in books and politicians' speeches for many a poor man.
That people will judge based on things as superficial as color of skin or the packaging of a box.
He accepts this will not actually change, as the waves of the ocean will not suddenly change.
He does not seek to fight the waves of the ocean.
He seeks to know how to ride the waves of the ocean,
that he may be less torn apart and less fatigued from them,
and perhaps have them take him to where he chooses to be.
Only when one knows the waves well can one deal with them...
He has understood after struggling in his youth, that ideals should be based on the real world, a realistic understanding of the nature of actors, that they may not fail as those of Marx or Smith...as their innate limits as human minds, no matter how great, led them to not see things as they are, but as they wished to.
As obvious as it may seem, many have failed to realize the following:
One must see things as they are so that he or she may deal with them accordingly.
